Shakira - Je L'aime à Mourir (live)

Just when I thought I could not possibly love her more, I get a hold of this video.

And then I find that, Monday, January 23rd, Shakira received the “Chevalier De L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” from the French Minister of Culture Frédéric Mitterrand.

Here is the news from her website"

"She was honored this afternoon by the French Minister of Culture Frédéric Mitterrand who presented Shakira with the medal, which recognizes significant contributions to the arts and literature. Shakira is the first Colombian ever to receive this honor, which has previously been awarded to TS Eliot, George Clooney, and Clint Eastwood.

Shakira commented: 'I am so humbled to receive this honor in a country like France that has shared an important cultural legacy with the rest of the world.'"

In the words of Francis Cabrel, je l'aime à mourir!

A Golden Sparrow

Most business school nerds know how important it is to have a focused mission statement for your company.  This helps you align your daily decisions to your overarching goals and it also provides the customer with a clear understanding of your brand.

The two lovely ladies of A Golden Sparrow did not need to attend any business school classes to understand the concept.   This weekend, one of Lencería's customers, walked up to the display of shinny bracelets and tassels of A Golden Sparrow, turned around with a big smile and said, "these make me so happy."

Here is the introduction to A Golden Sparrow as seen on their blog:

"It is our most sincere hope that our jewelry bring those that wear it (and even those that don't) a bright spot to their day and spread a little bit of happiness. With that said, collect as much as you want because with every purchase a portion of the profits will be donated to a charity of the sparrows' choosing. Check out our website to see what charity we are teaming up with this month. Wear them, love them, and be nice. And know that no one was exploited in the making of this jewelry-- other than Amanda and Alexis-- but we assure you we are fine with it."

We are so excited to work with a brand whose goal is to make us happy!  We are even more excited to see how how everything (from their bracelets to their Facebook Page) is in line with this goal.

Congratulations, Amanda & Alexis!  Can't wait to see what designs you dream of next!

Planting an Ocean of Trees

We just received confirmation from Maaji that our swimwear and lingerie order is on its way.

Not only is this a good thing for our closets, but it is also a great deed to our environment because through the  "Planting an Ocean of Trees” campaign, Maaji promises to plant a tree for each swimsuit sold from its “Under Water Conquest” collection.

Our latest order obliges Maaji to plant 65 trees in the Andean region of Colombia!

They picked the Andean region because it has been hit by violence and logging of its forests for years.  The campaign aims to decrease climate change and to "promote social construction and recovery of confidence in vulnerable populations" by providing family farmers with better drinking water and helping biodiversity in the area.

They will be plating native species to the area such as Cedar, Willow, Oak and Myrtle.  Deloitte & Touche will monitor the project.

We are so proud and thankful to be a part of this campaign and to work with brands like Maaji, who understand that each of us can contribute to the wellbeing of this world and share the commitment to our collective health and happiness!

No judgement... ok, maybe a tiny bit of judgement.

Regardless, would I enjoy this game?  AND bring my own cooler full of Miller Light and BBQ chips?  ABSOLUTELY!

Santos and Shakira Together for Education

Even before she was a young rock star with purple hair and ripped everything, Shakira promised herself that she would do everything in her power to help impoverished children in Latin America get an education and hopefully end the cycle of poverty in the region.

Thankfully she has tremendous power!  With her Pies Descalsos and other endeavors she as done a lot to fulfill her promise.  However, her latest endeavor, Fundación ALAS, is the most exciting one for us so far.

The foundation focuses on the early childhood development stage (infancy to six years), which is crucial to ending the cycle of poverty.  It is proven that an investment in this stage yields the greatest return on investment for a community.  Why?  A relatively small investment does a lot.  Simple tasks such as holding a child, feeding him, and talking to him helps him grasp concepts more easily as an adult, supports his health and increases the probability of education.  This is obvious to all of us who have grown up outside of poverty, but the information is not so clear to families that struggle constant with hunger and/or violence.  Funadación ALAS offers educational programs for mothers, they have been building schools for children in areas that previously lacked the facilities, and they even offer "volunteer mothers" for children whose mothers work or are otherwise unavailable to feed and hold their children on a daily basis.

Shakira's star power combined with the cooperation of political figures such as the president of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos and our ex-president Bill Clinton and financiers such as Carlos Slim and Alejandro Santo Domingo has created a huge brand and following for this critical foundation.

This video is in Spanish and there is no hip-movement, but the promise of a better future for the children of Latin America is sweet music to our ears!

Speaking of Lists...

... here is a list of reasons to LOVE Agua Bendita's World 2012 collection:

1. The beading and intricate details are hand-crafted in Colombia, making each piece unique.  For those of you who love efficiency, this point really counts for two.  Agua Bendita employs women who need to work from home.  This practice is good for (a) the quality and time devoted to our swimwear and (b) your good karma.  Allowing women to work from home provides mothers with the opportunity to be present during their kids' early development stage (0 to six years old) while allowing the older kids to attend school rather than work to support the family.

2. Each suit represents a city, so if you happen to get the bathing suit called "Bendito Havana," you may end up with a colorful little Che covering your butt.

3. Their fabrics are European and the silk is from India.  You must see and touch each piece to know why this is so exciting!

4. The models for the 2012 World Campaign: Rianne Ten Haken & Bar Refaeli
